Convertible help please!

I want to make Knitty's Convertible Shawl, but I was looking over the instructions and I can't figure out what to do about the buttonholes.  Specifically, I have no idea what to do with the marker as specified here: *Buttonhole Row [RS]: K3, yo, k2tog, k1, place marker, work Row 1 of Lace Pattern 7 times, place marker, k2, yo, k2tog, k2.

What do I do with the marker afterwards?

Note: I've never done button holes before, but looking at some button hole instructions doesn't get me anything like what Convertible seems to want me to do.

Help?

The shawl has six garter stitches at each edge and repeats of a lace pattern in between. The markers are to separate the garter stitch edges from the part where you work Lace Pattern. You keep the markers on the needle and slip them to the other needle when you encounter them.

In the "buttonhole row," one of the garter stitches is replaced with a yarnover + k2tog. That makes a small hole where you can insert a cufflink, stud, or shank button.

Best of luck with Convertible. I've eyed that pattern for a long time and seeing it picked up by another is inspirational-- maybe I'll give it a shot, too!
