So I am teaching youngest roommate to knit.

He's 18. This leads to moments like:

"I have figured out that the purls are whoops up and knits are whoops down." I don't know what whoops are (rhyming with swoop), but it work for him.

He has a flight today. As one does, we went over his project. Him, after grumbling that knit stitch is The Worst, "I hope I get seated next to a kind grandmother. Who knows how to knit."

Teaching him is hysterical.

The rest of the house, whose opinions are "Knitting is some form of sorcery", is finding our lessons hysterical. Asp (L's mother): "I know your giftie brain wants to say that it's not perfect--"

"No, actually. It's really good for the first time, I'm just trying to figure out how in the hell he's managing M1 by mistake regularly." (Boy howdy has he mastered that one by accident. Yarnovers, which were my sin? Nowhere to be found. M1? We're at over 10 by accident.)

hee, accidental M1 is pretty cool in its way!

I welcome to the not-terribly exclusive knitting club! We do not have badges, but the yarn is pretty and squishy.

~grins~ I figure this means my stash will at least decrease, since lords know I don't need quite that much yarn. (Though I want it. Yarn is my addiction.)

Also, we're now at like four crafts taught this year, and his two cents is "Learn ALL THE THINGS."

I, too, learned m1 by mistake very quickly.

I found that knitting helped my dyslexia-with-numbers a lot but I still have trouble with reading lace patterns. Something about reading the / and the \ gets me.

Hm. Point. I need to figure out if written or charted is going to work best with him. (However, I've got him doing 2x1 rib for the foreseeable future, so we've got some time on that.) Personally, I love written. I never seem to get written patterns anymore.

Of course, given that he's got to do everything backward (I do portuguese, and there is no way in hell I remember not-portuguese due to the whole goldfish brain due to medications and illnesses, so he's now doing that), I'm figuring I'm going to get protests either way. Hence his whining over knit and not purl.

I once shared a train lounge car (on the western-Canada long distance train) with a teenage girl who was trying to cast on, over and over again. Finally I looked up from my sock-in-progress, caught her eye, and asked if she'd like some help.

After I got her sorted out, her brother said "You just saved her vacation! And mine!"

I really do love the ways in which knitters find others and help.

Also, go you for fixing her vacation!

Yay more knitters! I love seeing other knitters out and about. it's nice that he wants to learn all the things.

Good for you, and for youngest roommate! I'm sure he'll find a helpful granny, or middle-aged mom, or pretty young thing; we knitters tend to clump together. I think the yarn calls to us subliminally.
