Deep Fall Knitty chat

With the Deep Fall Knitty hot off the presses, a chat post seemed like a fun idea.

What jumps out at you? What do you love? What do you hate? What will you make? And does anyone think having two fall issues is a bit nutty?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand go!

I'm in Australia, so it's coming into spring for me, but I like the look of 'Scarlow', maybe in muted tones for me though.
And if I get started now, maybe I'll actually have it finished before next winter! Or..not!

I love the look of Cadence, but I am SO OVER "top down all in one piece" sweaters. Give me seams, damm it!

Haven't been able to look at most of the patterns because everyone else broke the site. But I like Nemesis. I think I shall make them.
A couple of the tops look very pretty in the teeny photo but I can't get onto the pattern page to look at the whole package.

I kind of like the two fall issues thing because it feels like we get more Knitty for our... um... no money!

One thing I am irritated with, and this is nothing to do with Knitty itself & not anyone else's fault, is all the bloody toe-up socks in every issue. So many pretty socks and they're all toe-up. My first (and only) pair of toe-ups were an utter disaster and I can't bring myself to make any more. But I keep seeing lovely patterns for them and thinking 'Oooh, I want to make that.' and then feeling all sad and let down when I realise they are the dread toe-up socks :-(

I don't often print patterns from KNitty, but I did with Nemesis right away! They are exactly the sort of pattern I love - geometric and cool.

And it's pretty easy to convert toe-up socks to cuff down, you just exchange the type of toe and heel to whatever sort you prefer, and flip the charts over. (Or, sometimes it doesn't matter if the stitch pattern is upside down, it'll still make a nice sock.)

I used to convert all the sock patterns I came across to toe-up, because it was what I preferred. Now I've finally got the hang of making cuff-down, and I can make 'em either way. But I encourage you to try doing a toe-up sock from the cuff down! I think you'll be pleased to discover that all the sock patterns are available to you, when you can do that. :-)

I've heard you can do that - I just need to have a crack at it, I guess!
I agree, re Nemesis. I want to print it out and make it right now. But I have a million other things to make first :-(

I've got my eye on Eileen - and Mothed, though I'd lengthen the sleeves, because I like long sleeves - I just have to find a substitute yarn that isn't wool, is available in the UK and isn't too expensive!

I think having two autumn issues is a great idea just in terms of balance - there must be far more potential autumn/winter patterns than spring/summer ones.

"there must be far more potential autumn/winter patterns than spring/summer ones."

Yes, this is what I was thinking too.

I live in Canada (same area as Amy, actually), and I felt a little cheated when spring and summer were combined in favour of more fall. It feels quite regional. Yeah, there are more knitting patterns for cooler climes, but that just makes it a challenge. *sulk*

Also (coincidentally?), nothing in this issue really jumped at me. I didn't hate it, but there was nothing I adored.

I, too, am seriously over the top-down seamless construction. Sure, it's handy as all getout, but raglan sleeves are a challenging fit, especially since no one seems to build some short rows in. Humans do not have radial symmetry, people!

*ahem*

Wow, quite a lot of boat-neck jumpers all of a sudden. Sort of surprising, considering I've seen maybe 2 or 3 in all the other issues combined. (I love a boat neck, and I've got some sport weight alpaca just waiting to become one when I find the right pattern for it.)

I like Lia very much, I think it would be flattering to my boxy/apple shape and I like the cable pattern. I may never knit it, though, because with hot flashes I need a cardigan that is easy to remove. !!! I also like the Ringwood gloves, they're interesting.

I don't hate any of it but none of the other items suit me.

I agree.

I really like the visual hourglass created by the cables. I'm not sure about using a chunky yarn for a pullover. I'm ... shall we say fluffy, and big yarn sweaters seem counter-intuitive. But it looks really good on the model, who isn't a size zero, so I may actually try to do this one.

I marked three of the patterns, Lia, Scare isle beret and the kilt hose Kilravock. I don't know that I'll make the beret (no one I know wears them and my face isn't suited for them) but I like hte idea. Lia may get made, eventually, if I don't get distracted, and I've already got in mine the yarn I want to use for the socks. I may do nemesis instead, though; I like the curves of Nemesis. But I've been keeping an eye out for a shaped calf knee socks, I love the banded cable for the folded over cuff (and clearly I need preactice in grafting) and I seem to knit super-tight, so maybe a man's sock would be simpler / require less fiddling for sizing.

I like the look of spry? Scry? (the slouchy hat that uses multiple balls of the same varigated yarn to create visual complexity while remaining structurally simple) but it's not suited to this region.

[personal profile] to_love_a_rose 2010-10-01 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Brambles the second I saw it. Since I like slouchy hats, I'm going with the large size. I chose a Malabrigo variegated in shades of pink for the yarn. I cast on with size 4 dpn because I don't have a size 4 circular, but I will go out and buy a size 6 circular for the body. I could potentially do the whole thing on dpn, but I can't see it being very enjoyable.

And I absolutely love Kilravock, but I have a thing for men in skirts, so possible that has less to do with the pattern and more to do with the pictures. ;)

Nope, not really loving this issue. The only thing I'm planning to knit from it is Franklin's travel cap, to go with a future Victorian ensemble.

I think my year's knitting is mostly going to be out of Kim Hargreaves books this year.

I like the look of Cadence, but I doubt I'm going to get time to even think about knitting it before the weather gets too warm for me to wear it. I don't think I love the look of it enough to make time.

I love the pattern stitch on vines, but that neckline wouldn't work on me so I'm going to try & come up with another way to use it.

Pretty Maids jumped out at me too, but maybe because I'm still undecided on how to use my Sterling Silk & Silver yarn. Since the pattern calls for sport weight fingering may give me a medium-sized triangle scarf & then I can use the rest for matching gauntlets.

Having two Fall issues does seem a little nutty, but I love to browse patterns & read about knitting so it's my kinda nutty. :)

The carnaby skirt is adorable. I usually prefer smaller projects (toys, hats, scarves, etc), but I seriously want that skirt. I love the pleats and buttons.
