Convertible help please!

knittingI want to make Knitty's Convertible Shawl, but I was looking over the instructions and I can't figure out what to do about the buttonholes. Specifically, I have no idea what to do with the marker as specified here: *Buttonhole Row [RS]: K3, yo, k2tog, k1, place marker, work Row 1 of Lace Pattern 7 times, place marker, k2, yo, k2tog, k2.
What do I do with the marker afterwards?
Note: I've never done button holes before, but looking at some button hole instructions doesn't get me anything like what Convertible seems to want me to do.
