Hi all!

I started this capelet/shoulder warmer thingy early in the year but finished it in September or so (it took a few months to work up the courage to cut open the steek!). I recently found the photos on my phone while searching for something else so I thought I'd share the project here.

The capelet is knit out of three natural colours of sheep's wool from a small producer in the area where my parents live. The wool is naturally very soft and warm. It features the silhouettes of two cats whose tails are laced together to form a heart, and it's knit in stranded colourwork. I designed it myself, starting with "I need something to keep my shoulders extra warm", passing by "I know of this lovely wool...", and ending at "it needs cats!!". I found the cat chart by image searching something like "knit cat chart", made a swatch, and off I went.

Three photos )

I'm very happy with this, it's really warm (which is needed at my office!) and very "me" with the neutrals and the cats. Possibly my favourite knit of the year? Except now that I've typed that out I come to think of some really lovely other things so maybe they're all equal or something. ;)

It's a nice bright day here, so I took the opportunity to get a picture of my latest knitting project and thought, well its high time I made a post about my holiday knitting. But one of my bits of holiday knitting was finished months and months ago and I couldn't remember if I'd posted about it. So I went looking back throught the posts to see if I'd posted about it...and then kept going further back in search of a post by me and discovered that I'd not posted here since this time last year when I made my last 'holiday knitting' post... *headdesk* so this is a larger than expected FO post because I have all of last year to cover...

Which is a fun shawl and very quick if you knit in worsted/aran-ish yarn on US #10 needles. I did it in four days, which is just about right for holiday knitting. Photos and info on how I modded it are on my journal, but here's a teaser from when I was working on it...

I just finished knitting Color Affection, which I know most people do in a lot of different colors...however, I picked lots of shades of blue with some variegations of purple and green mixed in. Why? (1) Stashbusting. (2) Zomg blue is my favorite color and it will match a lot of my wardrobe. (I did end up buying the third color, because I couldn't find a set of three that matched in my stash.)

Enough talking. Moar knitting picturez!

Note that I was unable to get gauge, despite swatching twice. Apparently when I knit large, heavier objects it really messes with my gauge, and I don't know how to compensate for this.

It's a fun knit, I got to practice carrying yarn and learned the difference between "make 1 right" and "make 1 left". (Side note: if you do make this, it does take a concerted effort to have your make 1's be loose while you're carrying the yarn. This is worth the effort.)

Over at my journal, I wrote up how to make this pretty little hat:

One photo under the cut )

I actually "messed up" trying to do a different stitch and discovered this one. It reminds me a bit of a whale fluke - that and the colors of the pretty self-striping yarn - so I'm dubbing it "whale fluke stitch" unless someone knows that it actually has a "real" name.

P.S. I even made a chart!

Two are Picc Line covers for That Charity Thing, and one is something I have been procrastinating on for ages...those socks for my mom.

I had so much trouble with the first one. Then I was on a roll with the cuff of the second and it didn't match just right, and then my mom tried the first one on and said the toe felt "tight" even though it was fine the night before. So I had to take a breather.

They don't match, I'm not pulling the first one back (turns out she was trying it on her larger foot), I don't care. She has a pair of socks, after 9 months:

I am so only knitting socks for myself now. And maybe my partner, if she's very nice.

Also? So glad I did those in sport weight.

wow. i knit this one up quick! part of my sister's xmas gift was for me to knit her the hat of her choice. she fell in love with escargot when i showed it to her.

the instructions were very clear and easy to follow, with some short rows done in the brim of the hat. even after swatching and concluding i needed a smaller needle, the hat still came out bigger than i wanted it to, but it turned out to fit her perfectly. i'm going to make another hat in the opposite colors with the left-over yarn - and use an even smaller needle - or maybe i'll buy a 3rd color... hmmmmmm....

When busily knitting other people's presents, it's always good to have a fun project to take with you when you go visit the person whose present is currently on your needles. I picked up a ball of Pompon because it looked fun and one of the woman at my knitting bee had enthused about it. I love the texture of this wool. Plus it's always useful to have an emergency present in reserve...

I just had to share some of the lovely goodies I've been knitting (many of which I improvised). Feel free to friend me on Ravelry, or whatever you call it if it's not "friending." I have the same username.

Anyway, here are some things I've been working on lately:

Still on the needles is a lovely Helix scarf that I'm making in lace weight baby merino yarn on #3 needles...it is slow going, but it's great TV knitting and is so lightweight and warm and lovely. Eventually I will finish. Maybe before spring.

It's been a long time since I saw a pattern & cast on the next day, but I fell in love with the Dragon Wing Shawl in Knitty's First Fall collection.   Thanks to whomever posted that First Fall was out!  :)  The day after I saw it happened to be payday so I took off after work & bought the yarn & cast on as soon as I got home. And today it's all finished & blocked & everything! I don't have any pix of it blocked & off the mats because my camera battery chose the exact wrong time to beg to be recharged, but tomorrow I'll have my slave resident photographer snap one or two.

For now, here's the saga of my Dragon Wing Shawl. It took seventeen days & muchmuch fussing & tinking, but now it's done. One sixty degree day would be nice, so I could wear it, but I'll settle for afternoons next week when I'm back to work in the arctic chill.

Pix #1 & #3 are the best representation of the color -- this one was super hard to capture, regardless of where I shot it.  Usually natural light is best, but not always.  Apparently.

Hello everyone! I finished up my first-ever sweater yesterday, and I'm excited to show it off. I'm probably going to take it apart to fix some wonky seams at some point, but I wanted to get a few uses out of it before it warms up for the summer here. I finally finished the topsy turvy doll I started for my niece about 6 months ago. I also knit a chemo cap and have started (yet another) project - stranded mittens! Well, I'm excited about them anyway :D

This is my first finished lace project so I have to show it off! It's the Dandy Neckerchief (ravelry), made with Dream In Color Classy's In Vino Veritas colorway.  It was a lot of fun, especially after I got the hang of reading/following the chart.

I've wanted to try double knitting for a while now & when I found this pattern I had to try. It took a while, but It's finally done! Not perfect, but not bad for my first try. When I can manage it I may do V's piano scarf this way, this technique is really fun.
