She could try the knitted cast on, only use a crochet hook instead of the second knitting needle. I'm not sure if that's the same as a crochet cast on. Anyway, I find it's much easier for beginners to control the yarn with a crochet hook. I use one for both knitted and cable cast ons as well as for picking up stitches.
