Suggestions plz.

Does anyone have suggestions for baby-related things for one scheduled to arrive late-june-ish in a hot/humid climate? My usual blankets would probably be too warm.

I live in a hot climate and I make blankets and booties and bibs from cotton. But how about toys?
The book, itty bitty toys has super-cute patterns in it. One of my friends made the pig stuffed animal from it (not shown) and she didn't swear at all while making it. :D

Perhaps a sunhat? I don't know of a pattern for one, but my guess is s/he will need one if it's hot.

Also, the world is full of cute hat patterns for babies, so you could just use cotton yarn & make a winter hat more summery that way.

Up here there is a nigh obsession about babies and keeping their heads covered. I've knit baby caps in cotton that were well received. And remember, babies grow faaaast: one friend I knit a little coat for. She gave it a weird look in May, but in October, was grateful to have something that the baby grew into, when it had already outgrown a lot of the other things.

Hi! I'm from a hot, humid climate and I always make baby blankets for friends both down here and in colder places. I just use lacier/hole-ier patterns than usual and/or use lighter weight yarn for the hot climate kiddos. I can't find the last fan pattern I used (and loved) right now, but a quick search on ravelry pulls up some similar patterns:

feather and fan
pine forest
chalice

Aside from that, as a recently new parent (if one can call it that--my child is a year old now), receiving gifts meant for the 6-9mo range was great because, unlike newborn-sized stuff, they could be used for longer than a week or two. :P

I knit a cotton crib blanket/heirloom blanket for my nephew in Mississippi. Hot, humid babies use blankets, too. I live in New Orleans, and we use blankets all the time. At least half the year merits a nice couch blanket or something to hold/pull close/use as a pillow.

The now discontinued Mission Falls 1824 cotton was great for my project. Knit Picks has a similar, nubbly cotton that wears pretty well for the kidlets.

Singlets and light blankets from bamboo or cotton or hemp are quite easy to knit.

I concur with everything above. ;-) Blankets are still needed, to lay on if not be wrapped in. And making stuff for the following winter is good! A good, sturdy blankie can be dragged around for years to come, as well!

Except for my very own grandchildren, I always give baby gifts sized for after 6 months. You get lots of newborn stuff and then the baby has a growth spurt and you've got absolutely nothing left that fits, so the poor parents have to go buy it all again!

Thank you so much for this post! I'm in almost the same situation and couldn't think of anything to make other than a cotton blanket, but I bought too much yarn. Baby hats in multiple sizes, here I come!
