I'm curious - what are some of peoples' favorite patterns? I have some folks in my circle who just started knitting, or who just got back into knitting, or are curious about knitting.

So here's some musings I have, if folks are up for it amidst holiday knitting and general revelry/chaos:

What are you knitting right now? (Unless it's super sekkrit)
What's a pattern you've knit before and have knit/want to knit again?
What are some good patterns for beginners?
What's a knitting skill (cables, bobbles, lace, reading charts, entrelac) that you're interested in learning (perhaps because the patterns are sooo pretty/interesting/whatever), and you want to learn? Perhaps other folks can offer good suggestions on how to learn that skill...

I am knitting lots of things. Mainly, an artsy use-up-stash shawl with not much of a pattern at all; fingerless gloves; a dishcloth for the car; a swath of yarn to be felted into a bag.

I really liked Wingspan, and definitely want to knit it again for myself. I think, though, that I can only knit one shawl at a time.

Beginner patterns I recommend:
1. Jacoby Fingerless gloves (basically ribbing with some increases done in the round)
2. Calorimetry is a good, quick head-warming project and teaches folks about short rows
3. Hats are a much better place to start than scarves, IMO, because you finish them faster and the gratification triggers more knitting. They're even faster if you knit baby hats
I want to learn how to do Fair Isle. I know some of the concepts, and have done some colorwork, but I've never done those schmancy snowflakes or anything charted. So I guess reading charts is on there too...I always get lost or can't remember what the symbols mean

Oooh, Wingspan looks gorgeous! It's totally going on my list. Do you recommend the lace version or the solid version?

I haven't done the lace version so I can't speak to that, but I knit the solid version in Worsted in four days of fiendish holiday knitting. I wrote a post about it not too long ago. I didn't find the garter stitch monotonous, but then I don't tend to find garter monotonous because it means I can go fast and get shit done. Also, because you're doing short rows, it keeps you somewhat paying attention.
