Chunky Cable Knit Cowl

 We had what will probably be our only Snow Day last week and I finished the cowl I started for the holiday break back in December.



I found the pattern here. It wasn't the worst choice for learning cables; the pattern is easy to understand and it is worked flat and sewn together. I did talk briefly about my early struggles in a post to my own journal, but on the whole I am very happy and cozy with it.

In other knitting news, I am about 75% of the way through my first pair of socks! For my next project I am hoping to combine with another passion (tea) and make a tea cosy for our pot. I really prefer knitting in the round so I am staking out some nice wooly yarn so I can learn steeking. Finally, I think I have figured out Ravelry, so if anyone would like to interact with me there, I have the same username.

I have made a couple of pairs of socks, but I haven't attempted cable stitch yet.

I think if you can do socks, cables will be a breeze. Or at least I'll say, I had to frog sections of my socks and never this. Plus you can totally use your DPNs/circular instead of buying a cable needle.

What a cozy looking cowl! The giant cables are so interesting to look at, and a bold choice for your first cable project, I'm impressed.

I have similar pattern queued (scarves, at least one hat) but the largest cables I've done were only 3 stitches each. Are these big ones hard? Because we're just going into autumn here and I wouldn't mind something seriously warm like that.

The only thing I felt was hard about them is that the yarn gets reeeeaaaally tight when you are doing it and for the next few rows. It then settles out to where it wants to be once its away from the needles Conceptually, they work just like any other cable.

Absolutely beautiful! I'm working on a baby blanket in chunky yarn with big cables and I hope it turns out as lovely as this!
