If I'm writing an academic paper and I find some information I need in someone else's paper, of course I cite them. If I'm writing a knitting pattern and I find something I want to use in someone else's pattern, do I cite them? Or do I just write up the pattern and it's fine as long as I'm not copying someone else's whole pattern?

Bringing an academic background to knitting leads to unexpected questions. :-)

Has anyone else started the Argus Shawlette yet? I just finished the "set-up" chart. I think I may have to go buy more stitch markers before I start the charts with pattern repeats.

I've made one tiny screwup so far - I did all my single decreases as K2togs before noticing that the left-slanting ones were supposed to be SSKs. But that's only three stitches, so I doubt anyone will ever notice. I'm planning to use a highlighter to mark all the SSKs before I continue.

I just found this site with not only a page of definitions, but video tutorials of stitches! It may be utterly below the level of most knitters here, but I'm enough of a beginner to be astounded by some of the visual definitions of things.

(confessions of a newbie: f'rinstance, I've been ignoring it when a pattern says "ssk" and just carrying on as if that instruction wasn't even there. Then, when my pattern gets a little off, I'll k2tog to make the numbers match up again. it works if you're felting it anyway.)

I'm currently (among other things!) making an Extermiknit! as part of a Dalek Knit-Along, but I took today off from Dalek Stealth (he's in camouflage blue/grey...) to make my brother-in-law's birthday present: a Dalek washcloth.

Exfoliate! )
