I'm making a pinwheel sweater and I'd like to edge it with some kind of lace edging, the kind which runs perpendicular to the circular part and works as a wide kind of bind-off.

The sweater's in aran weight brown wool and I don't like things that are too flowery, so I'm thinking something fairly earthy and simple, and anywhere from about 4-8 stitches wide.

Anyone got a suggestion for an edging to use, or can you recommend a good resource for finding one? I'd be happy to buy a good book of lace edging patterns if I can find one, so it doesn't have to be free.

The KnitWiki has some interesting vintage edgings. There's also Epstein's Knitting on the Edge, but I don't really like her style that much. Worth looking at, though.

I have an edging tag on Rav... here:
http://www.ravelry.com/people/anatsuno/favorites?q=edging&in=tag

Some of the patterns there are free, I'm sure. There's also the knitted on edging for the Aestlight shawl (pay pattern): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/aestlight-shawl

And the books by Nicky Epstein, Knitting On The Edge / Around the Edge / Over the Edge. Better to leaf through them in a bookstore before shelling out though, I think.

That's the one I was thinking of would suit you the best! I'm glad I guessed right. :D

I like a lot of the trims in 150 Knitted Trims. (Much better, in my opinion, than the Epstein books.) There's some that are pretty simple and narrow, so they might do the trick.

I was also going to suggest the Knit Wiki, particularly Home Work 1891.

Oo, that knitted trims book looks good. Also, D_C, do you have access to the Barbara Walker stitch books?

Similar to the Vandyke Edging is this edging that I have used to great effect several times.

I don't have any real suggestions for edging, but I adore the pinwheel sweater idea! Now queued in Ravelry for some time when I have time and energy...
