A quandary

pensnest: cabled section of knitting in deep green variegated yarn (Knitting pride)
[personal profile] pensnest posting in [community profile] knitting
On my recent visit to the yarn shop, I found this wonderful thing:

It looks like spun metal and feels like petting a bunny. I don't think I have ever seen a yarn that really looks like twisted wire and feels so soft! It's 67% merino, 33% nylon. Naturally I could not resist and bought a couple of balls—a bit more than a hundred yards each. And now, I have to decide what to knit with it.

I'm basically making scarves (and possibly also hats) for Christmas, and exploring a few fun and funky patterns along the way, but I'd like to figure out how to make the best and prettiest use of this yarn. Does anyone have any suggestions for a pattern that would show off the metallic-ness of it? I had a look on Ravelry but couldn't find the yarn at all, possibly it is very new.

Any ideas?

That's really cool! I am wondering if you could do something slightly Steampunk with it to show of the metallic-ness? But I don't know what that is. So I will look, because patterns are fun...

some ideas, feel free to ignore

OK, I had a go at this:

Scarves:

Kick Ass-Cot
Spoke Motif Shawl (I know it calls for *way* more yarn and is huge, but it strikes me that you could just make it smaller and have it be a scarf...it is crochet but I seem to remember that you crochet you may or may not crochet

Hats:

Fern Glade
Arrow

Gloves: (because these looked really cool and I think it would look good in them, although I'm not sure if it's the right weight for each so you'd have to check):

Petit Riens
Susie Rogers Reading Mitts

For fun:
Waitress Waistcoat only needs 300-500 yards
Edited (why am I reading your username as something else? anyway, I don't know if you crochet or not, but havea crochet pattern too) Date: 2012-06-10 05:52 pm (UTC)

There's a Steampunk cog-shaped shawl that would look fabulous in a metallic yarn: Industrial Revolution. It calls for 440 yards, though, so you'd probably need 2-3 more skeins.

I've made this shawl, and it's fairly easy, especially if you've had previous experience in knitting lace patterns.

That's EXACTLY the color I want to knit Shipwreck Shawl in. *is jealous* Do you mind if I ask what brand/color your gorgeous yarn is?

I would find a variegated yarn in oil slick colors (black, dark green, dark blue, maybe some hints of purple), and then knit a square shawl/scarf from the center out in stripes, so you end up with concentric squares of metal and oil slick. A simple lace might be cool for it.

It looks like Sublime yarns

My first thought was The Age of Brass and Steam, closely followed by Swiss Cheese Scarf. The latter because it looks so much like steel grating. Both patterns are easy to adjust the size to suit your yardage.

If you had a lot more yards I'd suggest Involute. Or maybe half an involute if you aren't into the full circle thing. :)

How about the Dwarven Battle Bonnet? *g* I don't know what your yarn is, as I can't read the label, but I used Paton's Orient for mine; I also used some of it to knit a couple of Cyberman dolls for a Doctor-Who-fan friend.

You might have to narrow it to get enough length with your yardage, but I think gridwork would look amazing in that yarn.

You know, if you were to garter-stitch up a wide scarf using some very big needles, like say a US 13? It might look quite a bit like chain mail. That could be super awesome. #justsayin

I'm so excited! When I went up to the yarn shop today for my sock class, they had this yarn! I couldn't believe how soft it is. I had to get some, too! :D

If you are US based, you might look for Lana Grossa "Lace Lux" yarn - it's basically the same thing as this, and I picked it up today in Tennessee. It comes in 5 colors (at least) - this gunmetal gray, a bronze, a red, a green, and a different tint of gray. :)
