I did it!! My very first pair of socks! That actually fit! (I am not counting the crochet ones that are like humongous mukluks I wear around the house.)
Well, the coldest it gets here is usually mid-forties. So folks in my area -- to keep their hands from sweating all over the work -- do small, lightweight projects in summer, and the warmer, lap-covering projects in the winter.
I guess, with air con and central heat, it wouldn't matter so much? But I've kind of adopted the idea to help me plan ahead on my project needs. "Spring is in X months. These are what I want to make. Now, what do I need....?"
They're the prettiest off-white. And they're *wool!* ... I live in the SOUTH! I don't know whether to not-wear them to keep them clean? Or to not-wear them to keep from sweating to death!
What wonderful choices to have to make! *happy boinging*
Thanks!! I found a design I liked and did that counting thing (otherwise known as Math) to figure out where they'd fit on the foot. Took ages. I'm soooo happy it worked!
Superwash wool. Fairly cheap stuff, it's not the softest around. And I've noticed I knit kinda tight, so although the "basic sock pattern" I'd found called for 2's, I went up to two size 4 circs. Both socks were done at the same time, and except for getting confused for a bit around the heel, it worked out pretty good!!
I'm a big fan of Cookie A, but most of her socks are top down and not toe up (reading the rest of your comments below...)
There's a ton of stuff on Ravelry, though, if you're on there. Lots of things that are free, or I also like to just browse around and then try to mimic something I see myself if the pattern is unavailable.
I've heard of her! Nothing but good things so far. And yeah, I'm on Ravelry, but it's getting kind of hard to see patterns in all the multi-colored socks they're producing these days. I'm the kind of gal who either wants people to notice the color? Or notice the design. Combining both means you do each a bit of a disservice, I think.
I really do need to try another pair top-down, at some point. Now that I'm familiar with the toe-up, being able to do the same thing in a different manner means I would start to understand a little more about how everything comes together, you know?
*puts Cookie A's book on her Christmas wish list!* Thank you!
I'm restraining myself from starting another pair. And it's really really hard! I haven't even picked out a design for 'em yet, there's no *point* in starting!!
Very nice indeed! And toe up, too, which is daring for a 'beginner' sock knitter! I do like that lace pattern.
Though you'll find that kitchener stitch is not really daunting, particularly on plain stocking stitch/stockinette. I've got it memorised now (it only took me a year...) - your sewing needle with yarn tail goes "Knit front - off, purl front; purl back - off, knit back", repeat till the last two stitches, which go 'knit front - off, purl back - off'.
The very first pair I made -- that *didn't* fit, let me be clear -- I did top-down. It's way too short and keeps sliding off, and I couldn't see the stitches in the gusset to pick up, the variegated yarn kept messing with my eyesight. The Kitchner at the end I only accomplished after the fourth attempt at it, with the YouTube video in front of me, stitching at the same time as the lady on the screen.
I think, in the end, I wanted to try another way so that I could get a comparison. Honestly, I'm starting to prefer toe-up!
